HELP WITH PAYMENT

When a death occurs, everyone wants to do their best in providing a dignified and relevant funeral for their loved one. Often the death will occur unexpectedly and not everyone will have the means to pay for the funeral they desire.

The DSS Social Fund awards financial assistance for necessary cost of specified items or services (plus up to £700 for other funeral expenses) to individuals who meet a number of criteria. The assistance is in the form of a one-off payment. The payment depends on the circumstances of the person responsible for the funeral, not the deceased. To obtain payment the responsible person (or their partner) must be in receipt of one of the following benefits

• Income Support

• Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance

• Pension Credit

• Housing Benefit

• Council Tax Benefit

• Child Tax Credit which includes an amount higher than the family element

• Working Tax Credit where a disability or severe disability element is included in the award
